What is Occupational therapy ?

Occupational therapy is the use of assessment and intervention to develop, recover, or maintain the meaningful & day-to-day activities or occupations of children and adults afflicted with neurological or muscular -skeletal disorders. It is an allied health profession performed by qualified occupational therapists.

This is done through the use of physical, cognitive & sensory therapy, techniques & specialized equipment to bring the best out of affected children and adults so that they get back or start doing their day-to-day activities.

What happens during an Occupational therapy session ?

Occupational therapy services typically begin with &include:

  • Evaluation – A detailed individual evaluation of the child is done, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the person’s goals,
  • Customized intervention – to improve the child’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals, and
  • Outcomes evaluation – to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make  changes to the intervention plan.

Here are examples of the tasks & skills Occupational therapists might focus on:

  • Social skills ( eye contact, name call response )
  • Self-care routines like getting dressed (fine motor skills and motor planning)
  • Fine & gross motor skills – writing & copying notes, holding and controlling a pencil, using scissors, throwing & catching, hand-eye coordination)
  • Gait, balance and coordination.
